Katherin Hervey is a multimedia artist and activist. She is a former Los Angeles Public Defender and volunteer prison university educator. Katherin received her Bachelor’s degree in Cross-cultural Communications in America from University of Washington and is a graduate of Vancouver Film School. She also holds a Juris Doctorate degree from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. Prior to law school, she was the Publisher and Editor-In-Chief of Shades of Contradiction, a nationally distributed arts and culture magazine dedicated to promoting critical thinking and creative action.  Both of which have shaped her life and are evident in her latest film. Katherin has produced, directed and art-directed short documentary and narrative films, several of which have won awards at prestigious film festivals.  Katherin is also Co-founder with her partner and husband Massimo Bardetti of Raw Love Productions, a multimedia production company dedicated to visual storytelling with social and artistic value.   The Prison Within is Katherin’s first feature film. Katherin takes us inside San Quentin Prison where we meet some inmates, jailed for murder or accessories to murder. They attend group meetings of the Victim Offender Education Group (VOEG) where prisoners and survivors come together to determine how the trauma guilty inmates experienced in their lives contributed to their criminal behavior and to understand the impact of their crimes on victims and their families.  We hear childhood stories mostly of being subjected to abusive parents, or gang violence or being deprived of a quality of life because of their skin colour. The almost 90 minute documentary is intimate, honest and shows the inner tortures of both the family members of victims and of the criminals themselves. Any preconceived ideas we have at the beginning of the film may stay with some viewers after the film. But I doubt that anybody who watches this documentary will not shed a tear for individuals both sides of the prison walls. Katherin’s film arrives during this chaotic period in which we live, and it contributes to the conversation about the changes our society desperately needs to make.
