Grotto Del Sole Greco di Tufo 2001

Best of the Red Bunch

My Dad had a well worn LP (for any post baby boomers reading this, an LP was a prehistoric CD, that had to be played on a Flintstone type contraption which captured the antiquated music through a needle, very often in Monaural...meaning you only required one ear to appreciate it) and he would listen endlessly to Maria Callas and Tito Gobi singing Italian arias.

I'm positive one of them was: Grotto Del Sole Greco di Tufo. And there was a pained, broken hearted sadness as Gobi pleaded with Callas to stay with him and not throw herself from the top

of the castle....well, maybe my memory is playing tricks with me again, but you must admit the concept has merit and Grotto Del Sole Greco di Tufo sounds more like operatic melodrama than a jolly good bottle of wine. Greco which means "Greek" is something of a nobleman of grapes, and thrives in south west Italy around the village of Tufo in the Campania region. So the Grotta Del Sole winery produces the Greco grape from the Tufo area. It's all so easy when you know how to decipher these complicated labels!

The wine is very dry, with a fresh zestiness and a

soft fruity flavor, which I find perfect as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to "Una voce poca fa" from Rossini's Barber of Seville!

Cheers!
