Glen Carlou Classique 2001

As a child I thought everyone in South Africa was a dentist, and that most of the population were my relatives. It's understandable. I didn't get out much, we only had 2 networks on TV which only broadcast for about 3 hours a day, and featured experts demonstrating the various ways you could cook a turnip. And my dad didn't like me reading the newspaper because I'd get the ink from the print all over our white poodle. It just happened that all my cousins in South Africa were indeed studying dentistry and chose to come to London to further their education. What an oxymoron!

Dentistry in Britain? London's dentists in those halcyon days of my childhood, if memory serves me correctly, would use a pneumatic drill to get

into the tooth and hit you over the head with a brick, rather than waste good money on an injection or gas. My dentist would also sing at me while he was drilling away.....and that was even more painful than the procedure....but as always I'm digressing, and telling you far more than you need to know. And what you need to know is this: South Africa isn't merely overpopulated with dentists from the Silverstone family. It also produces some of the world's most satisfying and mind dazzlingly delightful nectar.

Glen Carlou is the perfect example of this fact. The winery is located between Paarl and Stellenbosch, and the winemaking which has been under the stewardship of master craftsman Walter

Finlayson, is now is the hands of Walter's son David, who also has the ability to turn mere grapes into liquid gems. And the Classique is indeed a "classic" wine. It's what we call a Meritage in the wine biz. A blend of the biggest and boldest grape varieties which are the traditional foundation and building blocks of the French Bordeaux wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The wine is fermented for a short time in stainless steel to preserve the natural fruit flavors and then aged for 2 years in oak barrels. The elixir which flows from the bottle is a stunningly rich red wine which is packed with every berry flavor you can identify. It leaves a lasting, truly delicious, clean flavor in the mouth.

Which reminds me, I must phone my dentist (no..not for an appointment...he wants to read my review of this wine). Cheers!
